  1. What does USB-Autorun-Tool do?
    • Once installed, this program for Windows runs in the background, waiting for you to attach a USB storage. In case that happens, it looks for a file named Autorun.inf. These files are standard for CDs and point to a program or document to show. More precisely, a line similar to open=some_program.exe inside the mentioned Autorun.inf will cause USB-Autorun-Tool to execute some_program.

    • If you are the proud owner of a huge external hard disk, you will probably be annoyed by Windows' scanning for sound and video files. In that case you can use TweakUI or a similar program to disable AutoPlay, which is the Windows XP/Vista feature showing a menu once a new drive is found.

This program doesn't use the Windows Autorun nor Autoplay. Both can savely disabled, while still maintaining USB-Autorun-Tool's functionality.
    • To create an Autorun.inf file, you can either use Notepad or search Google for tools.

  2. Installation
Assuming that you download USB-Autorun-Tool Setup (55 KB) to your Desktop, you will need to execute it afterwards, for example by double-clicking. After finishing the set-up, the Startup folder in your Start Menu will have an additional entry. To remove USB-Autorun-Tool, you should go to the Software section in the control panel and find an entry, if your lucky (you will be!). After removal the program will stay active until your next reboot.
If you'd like to see some options, you can click the entry in your Startup folder mentioned above. This will give you the list of drives the program scans:

  3. Source code
The very small program has been written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6. The file USBAutoRun.frm is part of the package and contains all the code you need. To create a modified version (yes, you're free to do so), you need to create a new VB project, remove the empty form and put in USBAutoRun.frm. Now right-click the project on the right to get to the properties and let your intuition guide you.

  4. Disclaimer
You get this program as freeware, but I can't be held responsible if something terrible or unexpected or or or happens. Be happy!
